Overlooked Poker Skills
2010-03-26
In my previous entry, I wrote about the importance of poker hands order and putting opponents on a range. Both of these are useful skills that will help you realize your goals and make a profit playing this game. If you don't have a clue about poker hand order, you won't understand which poker hands to play and you'll frequently go with far too many Texas Hold Em hands. If you don't understand how to put your opponents on ranges, you will experience a difficult moment when there's action before you and you must decide whether to call, raise, or fold.

What are some of the most important skills that a new player should learn? Here I will list a few that a few people might think have nothing to do with the actual game of poker. I agree that they have nothing to do with actual Texas Hold Em hands and what to do in specific situations. But they could possibly be the most important skills of all because a strong poker player can still lose his bankroll if they don't have them.

Why is it that there are certain players that make a killing playing poker but can't seem to hang on to a bankroll? The quick answer is that these people don't use bankroll management. Bankroll management is a huge topic that can be discussed in detail later on, but the main concept is this: play within your bankroll. What this is saying is that you are required to always play stakes that are reasonable for the cash that you have allocated for your gambling.

This next "skill" might not be considered a skill but merely a little discipline. DON'T EVER gamble while drunk, case closed. Whether being intoxicated causes you to be reckless or maybe just unobservant, you rarely will play winning poker if you aren't sober. Tying into this, you should also avoid playing if you are sleepy. When you're not rested properly, you're more prone to spew in bad situations and make some bad calls or raises when usually you'd know that you should fold.

One last important skill that I consider of vital importance is tilt control or emotional management. You might consider yourself great at the game but if you lose control when things don't go your way, you will never see huge accumulated profits. There are countless players in this world that get angry when they suffer from an unlucky situation and go on to lose their bankrolls while trying to "win it back". Then there are people that just play poorly after they endure a bad beat, making faulty decisions and losing even more money during the process. Learning control over your tilt is of utmost importance, otherwise you can expect to make that extra poker deposit over and over again.
